Our Return To Melbourne

Ramsey StreetAfter a great night out in Melbourne to celebrate our return from the Great Ocean Road, we booked to do a tour of Ramsey Street, the famous set of Neighbours.  We saw the famous street, which isn’t actually called Ramsey Street and is home to actual residents.  We also saw the school from the show, some of the sets and met a star from the show.  We were mortified that it wasn’t Karl Kennedy but the Scott, the new mechanic, was a great guy.

After our Neighbours tour, we paid our ridiculous parking fee.  We had to pay around $24 to park for four hours in the centre of Melbourne.  You really need to hunt out a good parking place!  After the tour was complete, we set out on our long drive to the Australian Capital, Canberra.

Driving out of Melbourne was an extremely moving experience.  When you see images and videos on the news and on the Internet of natural disasters there really is something that gets lost in translation.  We knew the fires were devastating but we didn’t really appreciate the scale of it until we drove out of the city.  We looked to our left and right and for as far as the eye could see there were trees burned to cinders.  The devastation lasted for about a twenty-minute drive, and during this part of the drive little was said.  It was really saddening and our thoughts were with the families affected.  We stopped soon after for a coffee and our spirits raised and we were soon laughing and joking and embracing being on the road.

We had decided to share the driving on a daily basis.  Max was happy to drive the long drive but kindly requested that we stay awake.  I failed him.  I was so tired; I couldn’t help but nod off.  I woke up and we had found a nice campsite to park for the night.  We prepared the van and soon we were all asleep.

We woke up early in the morning and made a great breakfast.  Egg sandwiches cooked on the stove followed by some Weetabix and a Banana.  We then set off on the road for the remaining thirty minutes drive into the city centre.  We drove in past the impressive parliament buildings and the lake.  A fact about Canberra – it’s the only place in Australia that Prostitution and fireworks are legal, bizarre!  We decided that it was best to stay in a hostel seeing as we were in the middle of the city sand so after a quick consultation of the Lonely Planet, we decided to stay at the YHA.  We are all YHA members and so got a 10% discount.

Mooseheads!!Canberra is not really geared for tourists and apart from inner city attractions, there isn’t a great deal to keep backpackers entertained.  We only ventured there as a stop off on our way to Sydney and to see a friend.  We hadn’t seen our friend in a while and so decided to go for a night out in the city.  We had received several recommendations about an establishment called – MOOSEHEADS.

The place is an infamous Bar/Nightclub amongst locals and its slogan is “Get loose at the Moose!”  It has three floors and serves very cheap drinks.  It’s the place to go if you are in Canberra.  It plays great music and stays open very late.  We had an awesome time!  The only thing I can talk higher of is the Chicken Supreme they serve in a fast food joint just down the road from Mooseheads.  It is amazing food to have after a night out.

Now it’s back on the road to the famous city of Sydney.
